Reconnection & support project for homeless Middle and Eastern European migrants – Team Nijmegen
Stichting Barka’s support & reconnection programme for the homeless Middle and Eastern European migrants in Nijmegen started in February 2014 following an invitation from the municipality of Nijmegen. Stichting Barka now assists homeless Polish and other Central and Eastern European people, who are not able to cope with life in Nijmegen. In some cases, support in Nijmegen might be provided to specific individuals who’s nature of homelessness stems from social issues. For others who struggle with addiction problems, our reconnection programme is in place to help these individuals return to their home countries, to either enter rehab treatment facilities, mental help clinics, return directly to families, or to Barka Network programmes (educational, skill building and/or community based programmes) in Poland. Through this programme, individuals are being given the tools to rebuild their lives even when coming from the worst circumstances.
Our team in Nijmegen consists of Ania and Marek. Ania is a social worker and Marek has personal experience with homelessness and addiction, which he overcame successfully within the Barka Network programme in Poland. Today he has dedicated himself to helping others achieve the same!
