Reconnection program

Reconnecting with the job market or the country of origin

Through our Reconnection Program, we support vulnerable and homeless EU citizens dealing with complex issues such as unemployment, addiction, mental health problems, long-term homelessness, or loss of legal residency status.
For those who are sufficiently self-reliant, we offer intensive guidance with reintegration into the Dutch labor market and society. This helps individuals regain control over their lives and build a dignified existence. If there is no realistic future in the Netherlands, we assist in reconnecting with the country of origin, so they can make a fresh start there.

Our teams are active throughout the Netherlands

Barka is present wherever our target group is located: on the streets, at train stations, in parks, or at shelters. Across the country, we work with both fixed and mobile teams to reach and support homeless individuals in an accessible, personal way and in their own language.

Our teams consist of a social worker and a “leader.” The leader is someone with personal experience of homelessness and addiction who has successfully been supported within the Barka network in Poland. The social worker speaks the language, knows about legal rights and obligations in the Netherlands, and has completed formal training in the social field or psychology. By building a relationship of trust, we aim to motivate people to take steps forward. This can lead to returning to work or returning to their country of origin to reintegrate or recover.

Reconnection with the Dutch labor market

Barka supports homeless EU citizens who are unemployed by reconnecting them with Dutch labor market. We assist with drafting a CV, preparing all necessary administrative documents, contacting potential employers, mediating between employers and job candidates. This program is suitable for people who are strong enough to function independently and who have the communication skills needed to maintain a working relationship.

Reconnection with the country of origin

People dealing with health issues, addiction, psychological problems, and unemployment may not always receive the proper care and guidance in the Netherlands. In such cases, returning to the country of origin is often the best option.

Many people choose to return to their family and recover within a familiar environment. Others are not able or willing to take that step on their own and need more support during this process. Depending on what is needed, a suitable place can be arranged, for example, in one of Barka’s self-sustaining living and working communities in Poland, to a shelter, medical institution, addiction clinic, or rehabilitation center in the country of origin.
