Barka supports vulnerable and homeless EU citizens

A lifeline for the homeless and an experienced partner for other organizations

Barka is committed to supporting vulnerable EU citizens who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. These are often people from Central and Eastern Europe who have come to the Netherlands in search of work.

We work together with many different partner organizations, including government ministries, municipalities, care institutions and foundations. By sharing our specific knowledge and experience, we help improve the joint approach to homelessness in the Netherlands.

More about Barka

What Barka does

Support and information

Barka has Support and Information Centers at several locations in the Netherlands where people are welcome for social, legal, and administrative support in areas such as housing, work, and general well-being. We offer assistance in multiple languages.

Reconnection

Through our Reconnection program, we support homeless individuals from EU countries who are facing major challenges. We help people find work or assist in locating a suitable place in their home country where they can reintegrate or recover.

Knowledge partner

Our working method is unique. As a knowledge partner, we share the experience and expertise we have built up over the years with policymakers, researchers, and care providers, so that vulnerable and homeless EU citizens can receive the best possible support.

Barka works with experts by experience

Barka is originally a Polish foundation that has been active in the Netherlands since 2012. Across the country, we work with both fixed and mobile teams to reach and support homeless individuals in an accessible, personal way and in their own language. Each team consists of a social worker and a “leader”: someone with personal experience of homelessness and addiction. It is precisely this combination of professional knowledge and personal understanding that makes our approach both effective and authentic.
